Despondency Sets In

Moth World Championship
Melbourne, Australia

Another day sitting on the beach at Black Rock Yacht Club in Victoria waiting and hoping to get some racing in at the Moth World Championships at Sail Melbourne – that’s what the 47 Moth competitors have done most of since arriving in Melbourne for the Worlds.
Only four races of their planned 10 race series have been completed and with only one day remaining, it is not enough to even constitute their series – they need at least five.

It was not so much the wind today – more the waves and swell, officials reporting waves up to eight feet – just too much for the Moths.

Competitors are feeling robbed, not to mention bored, but there is nothing anybody can do about the unseasonal weather that has beset Melbourne this past week.

At Black Rock YC this afternoon, race official Bill BELL is like the competitors, he would just like to get some races away and give competitors who have come from around Australia, Great Britain, Switzerland, Germany, Singapore and Japan a fair go.

The weather forecast does look promising for tomorrow, the bureau forecasting 15-20 knot winds and a bright sunny day. Let’s hope so.

Bell says the Club will try to get four races in to finish the series off, starting around 10.00am in the morning, local time.

Currently, Black Rock sailor, Rohan VEAL leads the series with four wins, with two of Britain’s best giving chase.

The current standings are:

1 Outlaw - Rohan Veal (AUS) 4 pts

2 Shoulder Angel - Simon Payne (GBR) 20

3 Mistress - Adam May (GBR) 26

4 On The Razor's Edge - Mark Robinson (SIN) 27

5 Sector 7-G - Les Thorpe (AUS) 27
