International Day of Disabled Persons
From 1 to 2 December 2005, the observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons is taking place at the United Nations Headquarters (UN HQ) in New York, USA. Linda MASTANDREA, representative of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), is giving a speech, entitled 'Disability, Sports and Development'.
The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with a disability.
The theme for this year’s observance is 'Rights of persons with disabilities: action in development', and aims at highlighting the interdependence between human rights of persons with a disability and development.
In connection with the day, the award winning movie 'Murderball', a documentary about athletes with quadriplegia playing Wheelchair Rugby to overcome obstacles and compete in the Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece, will be screened at UN HQ.
