EVENT REPORT - SARDINIA ROLEX CUP 2004
ISAF OFFSHORE TEAM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
REPORT
The event took place in Porto Cervo from 19th to 26th of June.
Seven teams from six different countries participated. (Two teams from Italy).
One Swan 45, one Farr 40 and one IMS boat (GPH between 344.0 and 580.0) per team; one team was composed only of a Farr 40 and a Swan 45.
1 - COMPETITORS
• Italy (two teams)
• Spain
• USA
• Germany
• Switzerland
• Argentina
Some economic support was provided by the O.A. for the participation of three teams.
Some teams utilized chartered boats and mixed crews.
The nationality was intentionally not an issue and it is recommended to maintain this flexibility (as per the America’s Cup).
The level of competitors was very high and fully qualified for a World Championship.
2 - BOATS
The introduction of one Swan 45 and one Farr 40 in the team proved to be successful together with a qualified IMS boat.
One design boats assured good competition for a team racing event.
The band of IMS eligible boat should be substantially reduced and possibly in a similar speed range to the one design boats.
A Box Rule oriented boat may be introduced (TP52).
Being an ISAF Team World Championship and not a class event, class rules for the one design boats such as the owner driver rule or other limitation, may properly be revised.
3 - RULES
• At a team event, Appendix D or part of it should continue to apply;
• Possibility of having teams with only two boats could be maintained to have more entrants, and a maximum of two teams per country should be maintained
• Possibility of discarding one result of the team should be eliminated.
In case of a two boat team the average scoring for the third boat may be applied;
• Scoring for the various classes should be maintained to moderate the team racing tactics;
• Inter team communications to be maintained;
• Common start to be maintained;
4 - SCHEDULE AND FORMAT
One week period is considered necessary.
One lay day is recommended and proved to be useful.
A total of seven good races is considered a good target. Coastal race to be maintained to be raced in the daylight.
5 - RACE COMMITTEE
The selection of the islands course with a light weather forecast for the day was probably a consequence of the non familiarity of the PRO with the local conditions.
Similarly the decision not to shorten the islands race in the afternoon conditions.
All the races were excellent including the island race when repeated.
6 - INTERNATIONAL JURY
The I.J. handled the problem of conflict between the possibility of one discard and the team racing rules in a non homogenous fleet very positively.
Next NOR and SI of the event will reflect the experiences and the feed back from this event. Judges familiar with the classes are recommended.
7 - RESULTS
The Spanish team (including H.M. King Juan Carlos) won the regatta followed by the US Team. One point of difference before the last race indicates how close the competition was.
8 - COMMENTS
Some competitors were not prepared for a Team Racing event despite a clear Notice of race and would have preferred three separate starts and separate scorings for each class.
The possibility of one discard initially created some unfair situations properly controlled by the International Jury. See attached I.J. report.
