493 Miles Covered in Past 24 Hours

Geronimo’s pace is looking good, with 1811 miles covered since starting from Ushant at 13.25 GMT on 18 February 2002.

Onboard, as one would expect, life is in a set pattern with the 11 man crew split into two watches of 5 men, with Olivier de Kersauson on a floating role, available as required, with his main focus being on the navigation.

To ensure the crew achieve a decent sleep period in each 24 hours, the watches are 6 hours on, 6 hours off, which should enable at least four hours sleep in each off watch, and a total of 8 hours in the 24 hours.

The two watches are having a race between themselves as to who can achieve the best performance from the boat on each watch, with Team Cape Gemini Ernst & Young led by Yves Pouillaude and Team Schneider Electric led by Dider Ragot. Within the ‘on-board’ race, it is Didier Ragot’s team who have a lead of 8 miles on Pouillaude’s, whilst the ‘on-the-water’ race sees Olivier ahead of his position at the same stage in his 1997 attempt – so things are looking good.
