Mistral and 14 Foot Winners Announced

More than 3000 sailors from 25 nations are sailing in the 114th Travemuende Week which began 18 July and runs through until 27 July in Travemuende, Germany.

The first winners are already announced: Martin MORITZ won in the mistral one-design class in great style and the team Axel REINSCH/Oliver MARQUARDT dominated the 14-footer fleet. The keelboats ended their racing yesterday, too as the blistering heat caused some see breeze in the afternoon allowing the other fleets to continue sailing until the early evening.

Over the next few days the scene in Travemuende will heat up even more as several European and World championships are held within the Travemuende Week: Hobie 14 (Worlds), 29er (Euro), Sportsboats (Euro), Musto Skiff (Euro), Hobie Tiger (Euro-Cup), Hobie FX One (Euro Cup).

The 20-year old Moritz dominated the 21 strong Mistral fleet scoring five firsts in seven races. André HARTUNG (22) also from Germany had to accept second place just five points behind. Romy KINZL (GER) ranked at number 6 in the ISAF World Rankings showed that she could cope with the mixed fleet and after taking the bullet in the last race she overtook Richard STAUFFACHER from Switzerland to take the bronze.

In the International 14 Foot class the favourites clearly showed their strength from the beginning. REINSCH/MARQUARDT ended seven of their eleven races in front of the fleet, and the 26- and 27- year olds truly deserved the victory.

Peter ROOCKS and Ole KLINGER secured a second without doubt, with 24 points ahead of Ralf Meier and Jan Witte who finished third with 34 points.

The best offshore sailors from Friday and Saturday could not loose their lead on Sunday and were celebrated winners of the Travemuende Week. Race officer Andreas STÜLCKEN tried to start a race, despite the unstable and light winds, but had to abandon the race after a 180 degrees wind shift. In the IMS I fleet Jens KELLINGHUSEN showed with his IMX 45 “Varuna” that he cannot only sail 3600 miles across the Atlantic but sail fast around the buoys, too. His latest success was the 12. place in the DaimlerChrysler North Atlantic Challenge. The OSC I class went to Eric Wolf from Kiel with “Bubetti”
