Bids In

With bids due to the International Sailing Federation by the end of today, 1 March 2004, ISAF has been delighted at the response and level of commitment to the future of this unique event.

After the success of the 2003 ISAF World Championship in Cadiz, Spain, which brought all the Olympic Class World Championships to three venues at the same time, with the added incentive of Olympic Qualification, ISAF has been totally supported on the event’s long term future.

The sailors and media were some of the strongest proponents, wanting a combined World Championships every two years, but for the immediate future the next event will be held in 2007, with a possible increased frequency thereafter.

Alongside the sailors, the Olympic Classes and ISAF Member National Authorities have also provided their full support, evident from the ISAF MNA’s by the sheer number of expressions of interest to host the event in 2007. Not only is elite competition on offer, but the ISAF World Sailing Championships provides the vehicle to showcase the sailors and sailing on the world’s sporting stage.

Tomorrow, 2 March 2004, ISAF will announce the venues which have confirmed their desire to formally bid to host the 2007 ISAF Sailing World Championships. A process of presentation and evaluation will take place between now and the end of April, with an Evaluation Panel appointed to make a recommendation on the 2007 venue to the ISAF Council at the 2004 ISAF Mid-Year Meetings, 5-6 June 2004.
