Laser Radial Team Announced

The Olympic Sailing Committee of US SAILING, national governing body for the sport, together with Vanguard Sailboats, has announced the team that will represent the U.S.A. at the 2004 Laser Radial Youth World Championship.

The championship is scheduled for April 10-17, 2004, and will be hosted by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Manly, Australia.

Five sailors will each receive a grant to apply toward the expenses incurred in attending the championship through a sponsorship program created and funded by Vanguard Sailboats (Portsmouth, R.I.). The program, in its fourth year, also provides funding for a coach to accompany the team. Brett DAVIS (Largo, Fla.), a 1995 ICSA All-American and winner of the 1992 O’Day Trophy (for the US Singlehanded Sailing Championship), will accompany the sailors to Australia as Coach.

The grant recipients, determined by the Laser Class Grand Prix Ranking System, will compete in the youth division of the championship and will not have reached their 19th birthday in 2004. Named to the team are: Christopher ENGER (Sarasota, Fla.), Leah HOEPFNER (Corpus Christi, Texas), Charles Ill (Stamford, Conn.), Sean KELLY (San Francisco, Calif.), and Matt STERETT (Corpus Christi, Texas).
