The 2004 Star European Championship got underway in Girona, Spain yesterday with between 6 and 12 knots of breeze and cool temperatures.

Two races were completed with Swedish Olympic medallist Fredrik LÖÖF dominating the first race and Alexandre HAGEN & Jochen WOLFRAM (GER) winning the second.

The overnight leaders were Ross MCDONALD and Mike WOLFS from Canada who scored a fourth and a second on day one and sit three points ahead of Hagen and Wolfram who are second. Mark NEELEMAN and Peter VAN NIEKERK (DEN) are third.
For the Italian crews this event is their final change to gain their nations slot at the Olympic Regatta. After day one Francesco BRUNI & Guido Antar VIGNA are tied on equal points with Enrico CHIEFFI and Daniele BRESCIANO with the other teams snapping at their heels close behind.

Race three got underway this morning at 12.15 local time but not before a number of competitors received a black flag and the Dutch boat of Peter Von Veen was forced to retire after breaking his mast.

A total of six races are scheduled for the championship which concludes on Wednesday.
