Four Races Completed

The Championship has faired a little better than Barcelona Olympic Sailing Week, a little further down the coast. A fourth race took place successfully yesterday, which importantly now validates the regatta as a championship.

Under rainy conditions, SE wind of 12 knots and a four metre swell, races were able to be started at 14:44, after the Jury postponed the first start, warned planned for 12.00.

Swedish sailor Frederik LÖÖF, sailing with Anders ELKSTROM has lodged a protest with the Jury as he was called over the line at the start. He went on to win the race and we await the decision of the Jury as to the final results of yesterday’s race.

Torben GRAEL and Marcelo FERREIRA (BRA) and Xavier ROHART and Pascal RAMBEAU (FRA) had a close race, with Grael the provisional winner. The Brazilian sailor showed his depth of talent in the race and keeps the Championship open. Rohart is now in second place.

There was bad news too for two of the Championship favourites who have also fallen foul of the premature start. Great Britain’s Iain PERCY and Steve MITCHELL, and Australia’s Colin BEASHEL and David GILES have both crashed down the rankings as they are now using their discards.

Two Italian sailors Francesco BRUNI and Guido Antar VIGNA, and Pietro D’ALI and Piero ROMEO are fighting for their nomination to represent Italy at the Games. The final decision happens after the Worlds in Gaeta. Bruni is currently on top in sixth position, but D’Ali is close behind and this will prove to be an interesting contest.

Good news is that today the rain is forecast to stay away. The wind from the south at 10-12 knots and the sea conditions to moderate. Today is thefinal day of racing. Full results are available on the event website at the address below.
