No Racing On Final Day

The final day of the event in Barcelona produced more inclement weather, this time no wind and huge swells meant that the hoped racing on the final day was unable to occur.

This left the organisers with the difficult decision to wrap up the regatta at 1400 hrs yesterday at the Port Olimpic, venue of the 1992 Olympic Games. Only one race was sailed in the majority of the classes, with the Tornado’s and 49er’s failing to do that.

The lack of racing for the 49er class, so close to their World Championship in Athens, was a blow to some of the sailors who had descended upon Barcelona for some last minute practice. The completely uncharacteristic spring weather conditions due in part to a violent storm in the meditterranean, has affected not only Barcelona, but to a lesser extent the Star European Championship in L’escala, to the North.

The storm produced conditions that were more suited to windsurfing than sailing as one can tell from the picture below. As only one race was completed, the regatta does not count as a series but the results from that race are available on the event website at the address below.
