After eight gruelling days of intense competition at the first ever PWA Grand Slam in Lanzarote, the PWA freestyle and Super X world tour is all set to move on to the neighboring Island of Fuerteventura.
Registration day took place yesterday on the 17 of July with Freestyle action for both men’s and women’s fleets scheduled between today and 21 July, followed by men’s Super X action on 22-25. Fuerteventura is one of the longest running events on the PWA world tour with its history of superbly organized competitions stretching back over a decade The unique combination of high level action, incredible conditions and a rocking party tent has placed ‘Fuerte’ firmly on the map as one of the favourite stopovers amongst PWA competitors.
The stunning white sand beaches of Sotavento are one of the windiest places in the world and during the summer months the breeze rarely drops below force four although force five and over are the most common conditions. Generally blowing either off shore or side off over flat water the Sotavento is a superb arena for both high level freestyle and adrenaline pumped Super X racing, although occasionally the waves can reach 3-4 feet and make for spectacular aerial action. The Rene Egli Pro centre at Sotavento is the event Headquarters and is probably one of the best equipped windsurf centers in the world. Alongside is the spectacular 3000 square meter marquee, which acts as a daytime home for the 80 sailors is also night time home for relaxed drinking and legendary parties.
With world freestyle champion Ricardo CAMPELLO (JP, Neil Pryde) producing the goods in Lanzarote with a clean sweep in both double eliminations the challenge is on for a sailor to raise their level and match his stunning level of performance. With five minute intense heats the order of the day, one false move could leave the door open for the likes of Kauli SEADI (AHD, Naish), Dionicio GUADAGNINO (Neil Pryde) and Tonky FRANS (Gaastra, F2) to make their move.
In the women’s freestyle, Daida MORENO (Mistral, North) looks firm favourite to hold on to her world title this season but Karin JAGGI (F2, Arrows) and Nayra ALONSO are hot on her heels in second and third, respectively, ready to pounce if the chance arises.
