Frustrating Day One

Two hundred sailors went afloat at Ballyholme Yacht Club on Belfast Lough at midday yesterday for what was to have been the postponed first championship race, but a promising light northerly which had filled in across Belfast Lough became patchy and died

During the practice race on 25 July, sailors had enjoyed a fresh north westerly but it failed to hold overnight resulting in racing being abandoned completely yesterday.
Three races are scheduled for today.

On Sunday evening competitors took part in the Parade of Nations to the Yacht Club. They were welcomed by Alan MCKEWAN, Commodore of BYC, Alderman Mrs. Valerie KINGHAN, Mayor of North Down, Eric SAUNDERS of the Northern Ireland Events Company and NI Sports Council, and representatives UK Sport and Rooster Sailing.

The Championship, which is the biggest One Design sailing event ever to be held in Northern Ireland, have attracted the cream of international sailing talent to what promises to be a week of intense competition.

The event is being sponsored by UK Sport, the Northern Ireland Events Company, North Down Borough Council and Rooster Sailing.
