Windy Day Three

The Northerly BURA in Zadar showed competitiors all its charms yesterday as it was clear early in the morning that the day was going to be a breezy one, especially when the sun made an appearance.

Initially rubbing their hands with glee in prospect of conditions that all 420 sailors the world over strive for, eventually it just became too windy for some of the crews. The girls sixth race finished in over 30 knots of wind and many capsized as some ripper gusts of over 35 knots hammered the course.

The silver fleet only managed one race as half of the fleet rounded the wrong gate in one race, necessitating an abandonment by the race committee.

In this high scoring regatta, consistency is proving to be the key to getting, and staying at the top of the results table. Matija LONGIN and Pavle KOSTOV (CRO) have mastered the difficult conditions best and currently lead the men’s fleet, although they were not too impressed with their ninth and eleventh place finishes yesterday. Santurde Del ARC and Quevedo TORICES (ESP) are just 4 points behind, and Adam ROBERTS and Nick MARTIN (USA) five.

In the girls’ fleet Laigh KEMPTON and Kaity STORCK (USA) are still number one, but they lost both races yesterday to Pippa WILSON and Alison TRUMBLE (GBR). These two crews have quite an advantage.

As usual we talked to crews that had some good results yesterday.

Pippa WILSON (GBR) commented on her day’s racing. “This day was suprisingly good for us. Good day in the office! Next races? Obviously big surprise is the jury and the yellow flags. A lot of people have been done twice already, so I think that is going to be very important in next races. And it’s so up and down and so shifty, you just need to keep hanging in there. Everyone is sailing really well, tough competition. German, American, Spanish, Italian crews are all very good. But we try not to worry about everyone else. Our team did good today, yes, we are good at this and hope we’ll keep up. “
