Light Winds Stall Racing In Calpe

Patience reigned in Calpe’s racing area on day two of the ISAF Grade 1 International Women Match Race Criterium, with just one flight completed in very light winds.

There was a high level of anticipation going into the second day of racing in Calpe, with a host of star names tied in second place on the round robin leaderboard, just behind overall leader Linda RAHM (SWE). World #1 and ISAF Women’s Match Racing World Champion Claire LEROY (FRA), world #2 Lotte MELDGAARD PEDERSEN (DEN), Silke HAHLBROCK (GER) and Sabrina GURIOLI (FRA) were all lining up just behind the Swedish skipper, but the wind refused to co-operate and delayed the start of racing until 15:00.

Italian skipper GURIOLI, won the first match against Spain’s Adriana ROMANO, clearly leading the race after gaining the advantage at the start. The second match was contested between the Australians Katie SPITHILL and Amanda SCRIVENOR. Although SCRIVENOR at one stage held the lead, she was penalized and world #3 SPITHILL took the gun.

The third match of the day was a fiercely fought battle between Camilla ULRIKKEHOLM (DEN) and Margarita CAMESELLE (ESP). ULRIKKEHOLM started aggressively, managing to put a penalty on her opponent and from there went on to win the race. Following the first flight, the wind dropped forcing the postponement of racing and the organizers will now look at the revised schedule for Friday’s racing.
