Shifty Conditions On Day Two At Delta Lloyd Regatta
On the second day of the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik, fluky and shifting winds made for a long and frustrating day for the sailors competing in event five of the 2008-09 ISAF Sailing World Cup.

Yesterday the wind was honking at a Force 7 but today, the wind teased and taunted the competitors blowing barely a Force 3.
The wind continued to shift forcing the race crew to reset courses and causing some of the fleets to be on the water for more than eight hours, sailing into the evening. After a strong start yesterday, the Dutch sailors had a much more difficult day in the light and variable winds.

470 Men
In the men’s 470 event, despite a false start in the fourth race, Steven LE FEVRE and Steven KROL (NED) are still leading in the overall rankings. They are closely followed by the Argentinean team of Lucas CALABRESE and Juan DE LA FUENTE. Pierre LEBOUCHER and Vincent GAROS (FRA) are holding third place due to two earlier first places.

470 women
After strong winds cancelled racing for the women’s 470 fleet on day one, the race committee ran three races yesterday. Penny CLARK and Saskia Clark (GBR) lead with three top five results and they are followed by Tara PACHECO and Beta Betanzos. With a fifth and two fourths, Margriet FOKKEMA and Marieke Jonges of the Netherlands are in third place in the general rankings ahead of current world champions Erin MAXWELL and Isabelle KINSOLVING (USA).
Laser
Olympic gold medallist Paul GOODISON (GBR) extended his lead in the Laser fleet – after five races he is counting just six points, two bullets and two seconds. In second overall is Croatia’s Daniel MIHELIC with 15 points, ust one point ahead of team mate Tonci STIPANOVIC in third. The two Croatians lie in the same positions on the ISAF Sailing World Cup standings behind Nick THOMPSON (GBR) who is currently in fourth place on the Delta Lloyd scoreboard with 17 points.
Laser Radial
After a strong start on day one, posting two bullets and a fourth place, Sari MULTALA (FIN) continues to lead the Laser Radial fleet despite getting black flagged in race four. Hot on her heels, and also black flagged in race four, is home favourite Marit BOUWMEESTER (NED). Maiken Foght SCHUTT (DEN) is in third place but 13 points behind Bouwmeester.
Finn
Giles SCOTT of Great Britain holds strong in the Finn with three races completed he has just six points and a seven piont lead over Ivan Kijakovic Gaspic of Croatia. Twelve points further back is Rafa TRUJILLO (ESP) who took the bullet in the final race of the day yesterday.
Men’s RS:X
Casper BOUMAN (NED) took the lead in the men’s RS:X fleet after day one with a first and a second place finish bu race three was not so hot when he finished 23rd. Boumann recovered to claim the bullet in race 4 and maintain his position at the top of the leaderboard. Piotr MYSZKA from Poland and Julien BONTEMPS of France hold second and third place respectively, both on five points.
Women’s RS:X
Blanca MANCHON (ESP) already has a 20 point lead in the World Cup Standings and her performance so far in Medemblik looks set to see her further stretch this lead. After four races she has seven points, with two bullets posted yesterday. In second place, just one point behind is Youth Worlds record breaker Laura LINARES (ITA) with her team mate Flavia TARTAGLINI in third place.
Star
The Star fleet have now completed three races and it is the young German team of Alexander SCHLONSKI and Frithjof KLEEN who top the leadboard after posting a first and a second to add to their fifth place from day one. Second belongs to Robert SCHEIDTand Bruno PRADA (BRA) with Switzerland’s Flavio MARAZZI and Andrew PALFREY in third.
49er
It’s tight at the front of the 49er fleet and it is British pair John PINK and Richard PEACOCK who hold a fragile lead after four races. Tied on 19 points just one point behind the Brits are Morgan LAGRAVIERE and Yann ROCHERIEUX (FRA) and Paul CAMPBELL-JAMES and Mark ASQUITH (GBR). With only two points separating the top three teams on the World Cup standings there is everything to play for in this fleet.
Women’s Match Race
Annelies THIES, Brechtje VAN DER WERF and Hilke HARMS of the Netherlands continue to do well in match racing. Of the eleven matches they have won nine and are thus in charge.
2.4mR
In the six boat 2.4mR fleet, multiple Paralympic medallist Thierry SCHMITTER (NED) leads with two bullets and a second place from Andre RADEMAKER, also from the Netherlands.
The weather forecast for the next few days is excellent. Starting Friday morning, the weather and the wind should cooperate to finish out the weekend.
