Medal Races And ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings From Delta Lloyd Regatta

A breathless day of Medal Races at the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik brought event five of the 2008-09 ISAF Sailing World Cup to a close with Great Britain narrowly beating the host Dutch sailors to top spot in the medal tally.

After Medal Races completed in the Men’s 470 and Laser Radial fleets yesterday evening, Sunday brought with it an action-packed finale to this year’s 25th edition of the Delta Lloyd Regatta. As well as deciding the ISAF Sailing World Cup medals for the podium finishers, the Medal Races at Medemblik were also set to decide the crucial point scores towards the ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings.

At the end of today’s racing, Great Britain finished on top of the medal table, taking home three gold, two silver and one bronze medal to strengthen their position at the top of the overall World Cup medal table. The Netherlands’ sailors also performed strongly on their home waters, winning two gold, one silver and one bronze.

49er

Australia’s Nathan OUTTERIDGE and Iain JENSEN scored victory in the 49er fleet after another strong performance in today’s Medal Race. They got the better of Pietro SIBELLO and Gianfranco SIBELLO (ITA), winners of the previous two World Cup events at Palma and Hyeres.

After a disappointing results at Hyeres, World Cup leaders Paul CAMPBELL-JAMES and Mark ASQUITH (GBR) put in a much stronger showing at Medemblik this week. They finished fifth overall to hold on to first place in the World Cup Standings.

ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings – 49er

Men’s 470

Pierre LEBOUCHER and Vincent GAROS (FRA) took third place in Saturday’s Medal Race, crucially finishing ahead of home favourites Sven COSTER and Kalle COSTER (NED) to win their second consecutive (and first gold) ISAF Sailing World Cup medal. Lucas CALABRESE and Juan DE LA FUENTE of Argentina completed the podium. The victory lifts the French pairing up to third in the World Cup Standings. Standing leaders Stuart MCNAY and Graham BIEHL (USA) see their advantage at the front cut after missing out on the top 20 (and therefore World Cup points) this week.

Ai KONDO and Wakako TABATA (JPN) ended up runaway winners in the Women’s 470 fleet, winning gold in their first ISAF Sailing World Cup event. Tara PACHECO and Berta BETANZOS (ESP) made the most of the absence of the top two teams in the World Cup Standings, finishing seventh overall to score 14 World Cup points and close the gap at the top of the Standings.

Great Britain dominated the Finn competition with Ed WRIGHT (GBR) winning gold ahead of teammate Giles SCOTT (GBR). The same two skippers also stay first and second respectively in the ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings, with WRIGHT now holding an impressive 78-point score after five events (thanks to two wins and two silver medal finishes). Ivan KLJAKOVIC GASPIC of Croatia finished third overall in Medemblik and is also third overall in the World Cup Standings

Beijing Olympic gold medallist Paul GOODISON (GBR) continued his flying comeback to the Laser fleet with his second gold medal from his second ISAF Sailing World Cup appearance. The British skipper kept a close watch on his only rival for gold Tonci STIPANOVIC (CRO) finishing one place ahead of him in today’s race to ensure he took the title. Silver was still a good result for STIPANOVIC helping him close the gap to World Cup Standings leader Nick THOMPSON (GBR).

After a disappointing start to her ISAF Sailing World Cup season, Belarus skipper Tatiana DROZDOVSKAYA found her top form this week, showing the ability that won her gold at the 2007 ISAF Sailing World Championships. DROZDOVSKAYA went into the Medal Race neck-a-neck with Alberte LINDBERG of Denmark but scored victory in style by beating the Dane to the bullet and with it the gold medal.

Beijing Olympic gold medallist Anna TUNNICLIFFE (USA) missed out on the medals, but a strong fourth place finish helps her extend her advantage over Tina MIHELIC (CRO) in the World Cup Standings.

Men’s RS:X

Dorian VAN RIJSSELBERGE (NED) remains unbeatable in this year’s ISAF Sailing World Cup, with victory for the Dutchman today adding to his World Cup gold medals from Miami and Palma. VAN RIJSSELBERGE took the title thanks to a win in today’s Medal Race and a disappointing fifth-place finish from Piotr MYSZKA (POL). The Dutchman, who has only competed at three of the five World Cup events to date, moves up to second in the World Cup Standings, just two points behind João RODRIGUES (POR).

Spain’s Blanca MANCHON put in a dominant performance this week to win her third ISAF Sailing World Cup gold medal of the year and extend her lead in the World Cup Standings to a massive 34 points. A finish of 14th or better at either of the two remaining ISAF Sailing World Cup events of the 2008-09 series will ensure her the title of inaugural ISAF Sailing World Cup Champion in the Women’s RS:X. Young Italian star Laura LINARES won silver in Medemblik to move up to second place in the World Cup Standings.

Robert SCHEIDT and Bruno PRADA (BRA) ended their debut on the ISAF Sailing World Cup by winning gold in today’s Star Medal Race. The Brazilian pair took a big lead into the race and ended up clear winners ahead of Fredrik LOOF and Johan TILLANDER (SWE) in second and Alexander SCHLONSKI and Frithjof KLEEN (GER) in third.

Another strong finish for Xavier ROHART and Pierre-Alexis PONSOT lifts them up two places and into the lead of the World Cup Standings.

Women’s Match Racing

After a two-event break, Women’s Match Racing returned to the ISAF Sailing World Cup series in Medemblik with gold going to Great Britain in today’s final. Lucy MACGREGOR, Annie LUSH and Ally MARTIN (GBR) got the better of the German team of Ulrike SCHUEMANN, Julia BLEIR and Kathrin KADELBACH 3-2 to win gold and also take over the top spot in the World Cup Standings.

Thierry SCHMITTER (NED) won his second ISAF Sailing World Cup event with victory in today’s Medal Race the end to a near-perfect week for the Dutch skipper. However Megan PASCOE (GBR) finished the series strongly to take silver ahead of André RADEMAKER (NED) and hold on to the lead in the World Cup Standings.
