Brazil Dominates As Pan Am Games Wraps Up

The Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico wrapped up on Sunday with Brazil claiming five gold medals out of the nine events on show.

Patricia Freitas and Ricardo Santos were dominant in the men’s and women’s RS:X. Freitas won nine of eleven races on her way to a well deserved and convincing win. Demita Vega (MEX) finished 16 points behind in second with Farrah Hall (USA) taking the final podium place.

Santos was also impressive in the men’s RS:X but he was pushed hard throughout the week by Mariano Reutemann (ARG). But with a win in the Medal Race Santos finished six points in front of the Argentinean.

After trailing John Mollicone’s American J/24 team throughout the week, the Brazilian team, skippered by Mauricio Oliveira, pipped the Americans to gold following their third place finish in the Medal Race. The Americans came down in fifth and missed out on gold by one point.

Alexandre de Amaral and Gabriel Borges (BRA) picked up gold in the Snipe and Matheus Dellagnello picked up the Brazilians fifth gold in the Sunfish.

In the Laser Julio Alsogaray (ARG) claimed gold by nine points and his compatriot Cecillia Carranza won gold in the Laser Radial.

Puerto Rico’s Enrique Figueroa and Victor Aponte came out on top in the Hobie 16 and Chilean Lightning team took the honours in the ninth event.
