Local knowledge

Japanese team leader, Aiko Saito commented, “We have four clear seasons – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. We are at the end of summer and into Autumn and right now we’re in right in the middle of high pressure from China and Russia and high pressure from the Pacific.

“It happens right at the end of Summer and at the end of Spring all the time. We have the Autumn rain!

“The entrance to the [Gamagori] bay is very narrow. If you’re near the entrance, the current is quite fast. Close to the beach there is not much effect – one metre up and down. When it’s light wind there can be some effect.

“If you’re further out, it’s a bit faster but up and down. The tide only comes into effect when it’s less than 3 knots.

“We’re in the bay and the racing area is relatively flat. Close to the shore it’s very shallow so expect choppy short waves.

“We are expecting Typhoon #21 in Japan but it doesn’t hit us here and the effect is right at the end of this week. If it heads north we’ll get a northern breeze.”

Racing at the 2017 World Cup Series Gamagori will commence on Tuesday 17 October at 11:00 local time.

Live Medal Races on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October will bring the week to a close before the series heads to Miami, USA.
