World Sailing Board encouraged by progress of Governance Commission

World Sailing's Board reiterated its strong support for the progress being made by the World Sailing Governance Commission at the Board meetings held on 18 September and 3 October 2018.

World Sailing’s Board reiterated its strong support for the progress being made by the World Sailing Governance Commission at the Board meetings held on 18 September and 3 October 2018.

World Sailing President Kim Andersen said, “I am really pleased with the progress made by the Governance Commission which has come up with some good ideas for us to discuss with the membership in November. Solid governance foundations and decision making practices are critical to all aspects of World Sailing so it is important we consider possible changes with an open mind in terms of how they can take us forward as an organisation”.

Following the Commission’s two-day meeting in Tokyo on 16 and 17 September 2018, the Commission Chairperson, Maria Clarke, reported in person to the Board at its 18 September 2018 meeting. She reported on the progress of the Commission and an initial draft of ideas on possible governance changes. The Board also endorsed the Commission’s request to do a survey to seek further feedback from members and other stakeholders.

The survey is now being analysed and the Governance Commission will be considering the results. The independent Chairperson, Maria Clarke said, “It is important that we continue to seek and receive ideas and feedback from all stakeholders and persons with an interest in World Sailing throughout the review so we have set up a direct email for this purpose at governancereview@sailing.org.”

The Commission will be making a presentation to the Annual Conference, Council meeting and Annual General Meeting in Sarasota in early November where it will share the findings from its work and present its early ideas for possible reform for discussion and feedback.

The Commission expects to then further develop detailed proposals on which it intends to consult widely in April/May 2019, with a view to proposing any changes to the Constitution and Regulations at the Annual General Meeting in November 2019.
