Six international candidates, funded by their National Olympic Committees and IOC Olympic Solidarity, have completed World Sailing’s 2018 Training Scholarship.
Held out of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy in Great Britain, the seven week program saw candidates complete both theoretical and practical aspects of running a sustainable National Training Program.
The 2018 candidates are:
Chard Banfield (GRN)
Geoffrey Baragamu (SOL)
Sandi Dekleva (SLO)
Przemek Filipowicz (POL)
Johana Rozlivkova (CZE)
Nattawut Vongrak (THA)
The candidates came with a wealth of experience in both Learn to Sail and performance sailing and their skills have been developed further with a mixture of training courses and modules from World Sailing Experts. The candidates shared best practice as well as practical sailing experiences. Modules in the Training Scholarship included World Sailing Technical Courses for Coaches Levels 1, 2 and 3, Project Management, Sustainability and Foiling.
Throughout the course, candidates were assigned a project to establish what they would implement within their nation on their return.
Previous candidates have achieved World Sailing Recongised Training status for their MNA or gone on to grow Learn to Sail Activities through school outreach programs. Candidates are also encouraged to present their projects to their NOC, to not only show the outcomes of the project but to ensure support for the project continues.
Each candidates project was presented on the final day of the scholarship to the World Sailing Training and Development team, as well as Training and Development Advisor and CEO of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, Richard Percy. Following the presentation of projects, World Sailing CEO Andy Hunt awarded the candidates their certificates for the course.
Upon completing the course Johana Rozlivkova (CZE) said, “I really enjoyed my time on World Sailing Scholarship. It was an unforgettable seven weeks. The skills which I learned here will improve my coaching management.
“We experienced ten different types of boat and that gives me huge outlook of the sport. Every specialist who we worked with suggested new ideas which I can develop in Czech Republic.”
Geoffrey Baragamu (SOL) added, “I really liked the course and it really opened my eyes to the world of coaching.
“I learned lot of new things and I believe that through my attendance on the course, I will be able to develop sailing further in my country. Thank you to World sailing for making it happen – not for me, but my country as a whole.”
