St. Petersburg, Russia will host the world championship from 4 to 10 August
For the first time the yacht club of St. Petersburg hosts world-class competitions in the Olympic sailing class. Regattas for young men and ladies will be held in two age categories – up to 19 years old and up to 17 years old.
“For us, the Yacht club of St. Petersburg, it is a great honor to host the strongest athletes of our country, Europe and the world,” said the commander of the Yacht club of St. Petersburg, Vladimir Lubomirov.
“St. Petersburg is a city that is made for sailors. One of our main tasks is to promote St. Petersburg as a unique place for sailing competitions of the highest level. The RS:X Junior world championship is the main sailing event of this summer.”
In the World Junior Championship, 103 competitors from 19 countries will take part. Athletes from Russia, Israel, Turkey, Hong Kong, Holland, Greece, Spain, USA, Italy, France, Thailand, Japan, Great Britain, Poland, Philippines, Belarus, Cyprus, Estonia and Oman are coming to St. Petersburg.
The nations with the greatest presence include Russia (18 athletes), Israel (17) and France (12).
The Frenchman Fabien Pianazza will arrive in the Northern capital of Russia to defend his title – he is the favourite for the championship. Already this season, Pianazza has won the European Championships in Mallorca, as well as the Hempel Youth Sailing World Championships in Gdynia.
Pianazza’s main rival is Italian Nicolo Renna, whom he beat to the title both at this year’s Euros and at the Hempel Sailing World Championships. Last year, Renna won silver at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Another confrontation between two of the major talents at this level will be eagerly anticipated.
Russian hopes will fall to Yana Reznikova of Moscow. Reznikova won silver at the Hempel Youth Sailing World Championships and also took bronze at the Youth Olympic Games last year. She will contest gold again with Israeli Linoy Geva, who took gold in Gdynia.
Racing begins on August 6th.
