The fourth day of World Sailing’s 2020 Annual Conference on Tuesday 20 October saw two open meetings take place virtually; the Match Racing Sub-committee and the International Measurers Sub-committee.
Starting first was the Match Racing Sub-committee at 11:00 UTC, chaired by Liz Bayliss with Pedro Rodrigues, World Sailing’s Event Manager, as Committee Manager.
Discussions focused on future events and how to manage the match racing rankings in light of the effect of COVID-19 on sailors and events.
In the immediate future, the World Match Racing Tour will hold their 2020 World Championship in Bermuda next week.
Elsewhere, plans are progressing well for the 2021-23 Youth Match Racing World Championships, 2021 Blind Match Racing World Championship, 2021-22 Women’s Match Racing World Championships, and the 2022 Nations Cup Grand Final.
The World Sailing Match Racing Rankings have been frozen since April 2020 due to the pandemic. The MRSC, in collaboration with subject matter experts, will work on a temporary solution to keep a fluid ranking system, which is fair to both the sailors that are limited in their travel and others who are able to compete locally. A recommendation will be made to the World Sailing Board through the Events Committee shortly.

The International Measurers Sub-committee met from 14:00 UTC, with Jürgen Cluytmans as Chair and Madeleine Dunn, Race Officials Manager at World Sailing, as Committee Manager.
Race officials’ applications received for 2020 were reviewed, with recommendations on these prepared for the Race Officials Committee meeting on 27 October.
The IMSC discussed updates to the existing international measurers grouping system, which will also be presented to the Race Officials Committee. This will help both committees and the Event Appointments Working Party, together with the classes, to appoint officials to major events in the coming years.
Developments to the annual classes reports were also talked about, including ways in which this can help the international measurers renewal process, and the Events and Technical departments who work across the international measurers area.
Finally, the IMSC reviewed education plans for international measurers in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and considered discussions around new ways of delivering training information.
