Three more champions crowned in the Olympic classes on the final day of the Pan American Games 2023

With a small window of winds from the north forecast, the race committee looked to get racing underway from midday for the seven remaining classes, three of which were Olympic. The ILCA 6, ILCA 7 and Mixed Nacra 17.

In the ILCA 6, Erika Rose Reineke USA had already secured the gold medal going into the medal race and finished with a bullet on her 30th birthday today. She battled all week with Canadian Sarah Michelle Douglas, who took the silver medal. Completing the podium with bronze, Luciana Andrea Cardozo ARG

Not just medals were up for grabs in the ILCA 6, four national Olympic spots were also at stake. Mexico, Bermuda, Uruguay and Peru got their nation a ticket to the Games.

“It’s been a very long week. It’s been windy so hiking almost every day and I achieved my goal that was qualifying for the Olympic Games and now the medal race was just having fun and trying to make the best of it,” said Florencia Chiarella Salas PER.

“We started [in] the first position at the top mark then we finished last in second mark so it was up and down. We got what we want, we qualified for the Games, we got a silver medal so I’m very happy.”Gold was already certain for Stefano Peschiera Loret De Mola of Peru in the ILCA 7, who also achieved a second place in the medal race to finish the regatta. Silver medal went to local hero Clemente Germán Seguel Lacámara. Sailing from his local club in front of great support from family and friends, he also qualified Chile for a spot at the Games.

Peru and Chile are joined on the podium by bronze medallist Juan Ignacio Maegli Agüero EAI who also claimed his nation a spot at the Paris 2024 Games along with, Stefano Peschiera Loret De Mola PUR, and Just Van Aanholt ARU.

“We had a really amazing day, where on the last day we were with 5 North American countries all within 5 points of each other. On the last day, it was really anyone’s game. It feels extra rewarding to get that spot,” said van Aanholt.

In the Mixed Nacra 17 fleet, Mateo Majdalani and Eugenia Bosco of Argentina sailed to their protected gold in the medal race in style, adding another to their first place finishes. Sarah Newberry-Moore and David Liebenberg USA were second and took silver overall and Samuel Reis Albrecht and Gabriela Nicolino De Sa BRA claimed bronze and qualified their nation in the Mixed Multihull class despite limited training time and experience at larger events.

“It feels like the jobs done because we secured the spot for Brazil in the Olympics. It’s been good, it’s been different than the Tokyo Olympics for us so far because we didn’t have as much time in the season sailing against the other boats. But we’re happy to be here and to secure the spot,” said Gabriela Nicolino De Sa.

In attendance was the President of World Sailing, Quanhai Li who said, “This is a wonderful competition, a great city with wind every day – which is excellent for sailing. Seeing so many passionate sailors here is exciting for the development of sailing in the region and World Sailing is committed to supporting the sailors with what they need and we are confident that sailing here will have a good future.”

Paris 2024 Olympic qualification place subject to confirmation of nationality and confirmation from World Sailing.
