The World Sailing Show begins 2024 with a look at potential medal contenders at this summer’s Olympic Games.
- A spotlight on the women’s iQFOiL Olympic favourites
- SailGP makes its debut in Abu Dhabi
- The race continues for places in Paris 2024 with more qualification events
- An epic finish in the Rolex Sydney-Hobart kicks off the year
- Recap of the Youth Sailing World Championships in Búzios, Brazil
This month focuses on women’s windsurfing where Shahar Tibi and Sharon Kantor are at the centre of a very strong group of female iQFOiL athletes. Sharon is the current world number one and Shahar is the current world champion, after winning the title in The Hague last year but with just one spot on the team for Paris the mood in the camp is competitive yet supportive despite the high stakes.
Next, the show heads to Brazil for a recap of the 2023 Youth Sailing World Championship Búzios 2023. World Sailing’s sustainability efforts and successful Emerging Nations Program were on full display as 61 nations took part in the regatta. The conditions provided an excellent test for the young sailors but with such a high level of talent on show it did not take long for the fleet to get to grips with the waves. There are interviews with the winners and highlights from 10 days of amazing racing.
After eight months of competition, the 12 skippers from the World Match Racing Tour arrived in Baoan, Shenzhen, China, to decide this year’s winner. A strong field put on a great spectacle with three teams posting 100% records on the first day alone. The wind finally arrived on day three, just in time for the knockout rounds to begin. With plenty of penalties and overtaking moves, the final would be decided in the last race of the penultimate day leaving just four teams to battle it out for the trophy.
SailGP arrived in Abu Dhabi for the first time as New Zealand carried on where they left off in Dubai, but Spain and the USA put up a strong fight to open up the competition with just six stages left in the season.
And finally, the World Sailing Show catches up with the latest Olympic Sailing qualification in Egypt, Australia and Argentina. Places for Paris 2024 were on the line across all events as the fleet begins to fill up. There is a recap of all the qualifying nations and a round up of all the major action from across the sailing world.
