The 11th edition of Foiling Week reinforces commitment to youth sailing
Getting underway on 24 June at Fraglia Vela Malcesine, Lake Garda, Italy, the 11th edition of Foiling Week – a World Sailing Special Event – aims to strengthen the commitment to youth sailing and sustainability.
During the week, 11 University teams from around the world will contest this year’s Foiling SuMoth Challenge. Each team must design and build the best performing and sustainable Moth before presenting the designs, conducting speed tests and taking part in a fleet race on the water. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the week for the most successful designs.
Throughout the week visitors will have the opportunity to try foiling for themselves using Switch One Design, Birdyfish, Armstrong Boards and Jetcycle Max under the supervision of expert instructors. Visitors will also be able to sail on board an original Azorean Whaler as part of the Foiling Week YOUTH program which supports young sailors of the Azores Islands.
Racing will take place at the site of the upcoming 2024 Youth Sailing World Championships, with a fleet of over 500 international sailors competing in six of the most exciting classes in all of sailing: WASZP, Moth, ETF26, Switch One Design, Birdyfish and X-15 wingfoilers.
There will be a Downwind Race on Friday 28 June open to any foiling board with any propulsion except motors. The fleet will race from Segnana to Malcesine in the morning, and back in the afternoon.
Foiling Week also features a full schedule of technical and coaching clinics and workshops to further the development of sailing. Omer Brand, Board Member of We Are Foiling and The Magenta Project, will coordinate The Magenta Project Clinic 2024 and the Foiling Week YOUTH Clinic 2024, while a special edition of World Sailing’s Steering the Course will encourage the development of female coaches in collaboration with Katja Salskov-Iversen, member of the ROCKWOOL Denmark SailGP Team.
Luigi Maffioli and Master Splicer Davide Fuzzi will lead Gottifredi Maffioli Splicing Workshops for participants on 26 June and Nicolai Jacobsen will lead the Coaching Moths Clinic on the same day. On 27 June, three-time World Champion Olivia Piana will hold a one-day foiling SUP Clinic at Circolo Surf Segnana.
A Sustainability Panel is scheduled for 28 June which will see speakers representing World Sailing, ROCKWOOL, Recarbon, NLComp, The Magenta Project, Foiling SuMoth Challenge, BioDesign Foundation, Terra Baleeira, The Foiling Organisation.
