The Rise of Inclusive Sailing Programs in Asia: A Unified Approach by Peter Jacops

Asia has witnessed a remarkable development in its Inclusive sailing programs recently, fostering a sense of unity and collaboration among its participating nations. This progress has been driven significantly by regular online meetings where these nations discuss strategies, share experiences, and plan collaborative efforts.

One of the significant challenges faced by Asian nations in inclusive sailing is the prohibitive cost of participating in international championships, most of which are held in Europe. To address this, the focus has shifted towards organising regional championships as well as the creation of the Asian Inclusive Sailing Series.

These regional events not only reduce travel expenses but also foster a sense of camaraderie and healthy competition among the Asian community.

All participating nations agree on the utmost importance of coming together as a unified group.

By pooling resources, sharing best practices, and supporting each other’s initiatives, they aim to create a robust and sustainable inclusive sailing ecosystem in Asia.

This collective approach not only strengthens individual programs but also enhances the overall impact of the movement across the region.

One of the ways this unity has been achieved is through the creation of the “Asian Inclusive Sailing Promotion” Program. This initiative aims to create awareness about the universality of accessible sailing programs throughout Asia and encourages all Asian inclusive sailing clubs to share their activities through the program. By promoting visibility and collaboration, the program helps to foster a stronger, more interconnected community of inclusive sailors.

Adding momentum to these efforts, World Sailing has recently published its Para Inclusive Strategy 2024-2029 with their new approach focusing on inclusivity. This global endorsement underscores the significance of inclusive sailing and provides a framework for national programs to align with international standards.

A Unique Opportunity arises at the SEA Games

The next SEA Games, scheduled to take place in Thailand from 9-20 December 2025 offers a unique opportunity to add inclusive sailing to the event. Thailand, which already boasts a very active inclusive sailing club, is

well-positioned to lead the way in integrating this new approach into the games. This inclusion would not only highlight the progress made in the region but also inspire other countries to embrace inclusive sailing.
