Max Maeder hopes to inspire a new generation to discover sailing

Prior to his Olympic debut in Marseille at the first Formula Kite event in the history of the Games, Singapore’s Max Maeder had already begun setting the world of sailing alight with his stunning performances on the water.

Capturing World, Asian, European and tour titles at the age of just 17, Max added an Olympic bronze medal to his impressive list of accolades, and it was this series of incredible performances that saw him win the first ever World Sailing Young World Sailor of the Year award in his home country of Singapore.

By crossing the finishing line in Marseille, Max became Singapore’s first Olympic medallist in sailing and also the nation’s youngest Olympic medallist.

Despite his young age, Max is well aware of the responsibility he now has, but is more than happy to be part of a new batch of talented sailors across all disciplines and the growing wave of popularity the sport is enjoying.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Max said, “It is simply a joy to experience, and I am grateful that World Sailing is promoting the youth of sailing.

“It invigorates me and inspires me to share, to bring joy, to connect and to have a positive impact that is being felt. It is very touching. I feel privileged to be able to attend and very happy to be here to receive the award.”

Max is now preparing for a new challenge, working a day in a local curry puff shop – fulfilling a promise he made before the awards.
