Hedi Gharbi on pioneering a Pan-African approach to development and sustainability

The 2024 President’s Development Award went to Hedi Gharbi, President of the Tunisian Sailing Federation.

In this role, he has secured support from the Tunisian government to provide optimist dinghies to clubs across the country, providing opportunities for hundreds of young people to experience sailing.

He has launched programmes designed to introduce sailing to communities in Tunisia, establishing new pathways for youth development.A key part of his work has been his commitment to inclusivity, introducing programmes designed to encourage and support women’s participation in sailing, from entry level to the elite.

He has also pushed for the reduction of single use plastics and promoted “clean regattas” to encourage sailors, officials and fans to protect the Mediterranean’s eco systems.

Unfortunately, Hedi was unable to be at the ceremony in person, but did send a message conveying his gratitude at receiving this tremendous honour.

He said, “This recognition stands as a testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in the development of sailing in Tunisia, from our athletes and coaches to our partners and supporters.

This award reflects our shared vision of advancing sailing, creating more opportunities for young sailors, and nurturing a culture of excellence in our federation. It is a proud moment for our country, and we are inspired to continue pushing boundaries, growing our programs, and making sailing accessible to more people across Tunisia.”

As an active sailor, he represented Tunisia in multiple events from 1988 to 2021, and indeed throughout that time he also worked hard off the water to help more people get involved in sailing – from the grassroots to the highest level.

Now his work extends beyond Tunisia’s borders, as he has invited neighbouring countries to take part in his events and hosting a continental conference on development, setting the stage for a broader, pan-African approach to growth.

A worthy winner, Hedi has contributed an enormous amount to the development of sailing in Tunisia and is spearheading a collaborative approach to two of World Sailing’s main priorities for the sport across Africa.
