Australia leads after day 1 of the 2024 Youth Match Racing World Championship

The 2024 World Sailing Youth Match Racing World Championship, hosted by World Sailing in partnership with Sail Saudi and Jeddah Yacht Club and Marina, kicked off today to start an exciting week of sailing on the Red Sea.

Under clear skies and a strengthening breeze, the first day of racing brought together teams from ten nations—Australia, Brazil, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, and the United States—began their campain for the coveted World Champion title.

Australia Takes Early Lead

The Australian team, led by skipper Cole Tapper, dominated Day 1, securing wins in all six of their qualifying races. Their impressive performance has positioned them as early favorites, but the competition is far from over.

Strong Contenders Emerge

Defending World Champion Ange Delerce from France and New Zealand’s Josh Hyde have also shown strong form, signaling their intent to challenge for the top spot.

The Road Ahead

The qualifying round-robin will conclude tomorrow, setting the stage for the knockout rounds. The quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final will be held on Sunday and Monday.
