World Sailing supports the future of sailing in the Solomon Islands

World Sailing has partnered the Solomon Islands Sailing Association (SISA) to deliver a Level 1 Technical Course for Coaches at the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands Conference Room and Point Cruz Yacht Club in Honiara.

Supported by the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Olympic Solidarity program and delivered by World Sailing instructor Becky Ellis and SISA staff, the 14 local participants spent seven days on-site completing drills focused on the fundamental skills of sailing. Through a combination of classroom sessions and practical sessions on the water, the sailors gained experience in water safety and boat handling, as well as enhancing their own sailing skills, before presenting their future projects on the final day.

Speaking to local media, Geoffrey Baragamu, SISA’s Sport Development Officer, said, “This program will help local coaches deliver appropriate programs for all age groups using proper guidelines at their respective club levels. It provides additional opportunities for local coaches to access a high level of technical knowledge, enabling them to implement the federation’s programs across the Solomon Islands.”

Baragamu also noted the importance of gaining World Sailing certification, which allows the participants to be recognised coaches in the Solomon Islands as well as regionally and internationally.

The Level 1 Technical Course for Coaches also taught participants how to implement risk assessments, safeguarding protocols, sustainability and emergency planning, as well as leadership techniques and specific coaching for Para Inclusive sailors, female sailors, children and young people.

World Sailing’s Technical Courses for Coaches operate at three levels, each with a specific focus starting with Sailing Instructor and progressing to Club Race Coach and Performance Coach.

Clubs can request to host a World Sailing course by contacting the relevant Member National Authority (MNA) and the Olympic Solidarity program through the National Olympic Committee (NOC).
