In Memoriam: Matteo Auguadro

The sailing community is mourning the tragic loss of Matteo Auguadro who passed away recently aged 48.

Matteo was one of three people overwhelmed by an avalanche on the eastern ridge of Punta Valgrande on Sunday, 12 January.  

An accomplished sailor, Matteo was part of the Mascalzone Latino crew from 2004-2007, the Momo team that won line honours at the 2017 Giraglia Rolex Cup and won the world title in the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in 2022. He was also part of Team Italy in the Star Sailors League and Andy Soriano’s Alegre team in the 2024 52 Super Series, finishing 5th.  

World Sailing CEO, David Graham, said, “We send our condolences and deepest sympathies to Matteo’s family, his friends and all who sailed with him. 

“Matteo was a talented, adventurous and much-loved sailor, known for his kindness, competitiveness and for being a great team-mate. His devastating loss will be felt across the sport. Memories of Matteo will live on and be shared at regattas around the world for many years to come.” 

As well as sailing, Matteo was a keen cyclist, skier and surfer. He was married with two children.  

He will be sorely missed by everyone at World Sailing and throughout the international sailing community.
