Training Requirements of the World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations

In 2003 World Sailing introduced a standard basic syllabus for the training courses to establish an internationally recognised qualification. The training requirements form part of the World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations. World Sailing Member National Authorities (MNAs) run and establish these courses and conform to World Sailing minimum standards. The following is a list of courses that are recognised:

STCW Courses

A frequently asked question is whether an STCW sea survival training is an acceptable alternative. Ultimately what is acceptable is up to the race organiser; however, World Sailing legal advice is NOT to accept STCW courses (however, first aid courses are accepted). The reason for this is that the STCW course is a commercial ship qualification and therefore does not contain sailing related items and recreational safety equipment.

USA (USA)

General Information

The USA provides its ‘safety at sea’ seminars in several modules. To meet the World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations Section 6 requirements, one must take the “Classroom Presentations” (one day) module and the “Practical, Hands-On Training Seminar” (one day). A World Sailing APPROVED OFFSHORE PERSONAL SURVIVAL COURSE CERTIFICATE (valid for five years) will be issued to all who attend Safety at Sea and Hands-On Training Seminars and pass the final written exam, all in the same calendar year. This certificate is required by some U.S. races and most Category 1 and 2 races that start outside the U.S. Some other U.S. races require only the first-day “Classroom presentations”. A complete list of courses can be found at the following link http://www.ussailing.org/education/safety-at-sea/
