World Sailing is the world governing body for the sport of sailing, officially recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Mission

Develop sailing as a sport with integrity, sustainability and credibility at its heart, enabling global growth through innovation, backed by robust financial decisions to create lasting legacies for generations to come.

Priorities

  • Events and Commercial – Embracing digital technologies, we will enable delivery of world-class events which are exciting to watch, easy to understand and easy to find, underpinned by a commercial strategy which strengthens our investment in the sport.
  • Growth – We will work with our National Federations, Classes and Continental Associations to provide more opportunities for more people to reach their potential through sailing.
  • Governance – We will implement our newly-transformed governance model, enabling us to operate efficiently, transparently and collaboratively in the best interests of our members and our sport as a whole.
  • Impact – We will generate measurable economic, environmental and social impact for our global sailing community.

World Sailing is responsible for:

  • the promotion of the sport internationally;
  • managing sailing at the Olympic and Paralympic Games;
  • developing the Racing Rules of Sailing and regulations for all sailing competitions;
  • the training of judges, umpires and other administrators;
  • the development of the sport around the world; and
  • representing the sailors in all matters concerning the sport.

Around 120 Class Associations are members of World Sailing which means they are entitled to hold a World Championship – more information about the different types of boat and board is available on the World Sailing Classes page.
