Offshore Personal Survival

In 2003, World Sailing introduced a standard basic syllabus for the training courses in order to establish an International recognised qualification. The training requirements form part of the World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations.

These courses are run and established by World Sailing Member National Authorities (MNAs) and conform to World Sailing minimum standards. The following is a list of courses that are recognised:

STCW Courses

A frequently asked question is whether an STCW sea survival training is a permitted alternative. Ultimately what is acceptable is up to the race organizer however World Sailing standard advice is NOT to accept STCW courses (however first aid course are accepted). The reason for this is that the STCW course is a commercial ship qualification and therefore does not contain sailing related items and recreational safety equipment.

USA (USA)

General Information

The USA provides its “safety at sea” courses in several modules and two formats, both online and in-person. The theoretical training is broken into three modules: Coastal (Modules 1-5 or in-person half day), Offshore (Modules 1-15 or in-person one full day), and Offshore Refresher Upgrade (Modules 11-15) for International Certificate Refreshers. To meet the World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations Section 6 requirements, one must complete all 15 theoretical modules plus a full day in-person of the practical (hands-on) parts of the training. The theoretical segments may be completed either through a full day of in-person classes or a 15-module online course. Either option requires successfully passing a written exam and must be followed by a full day of hands-on training within 365 days to qualify for a World Sailing Approved Offshore Personal Survival Course Certificate (which is valid for five years). This World Sailing compliant certificate is required by some US races and most Category 1 and 2 races that start outside the US. Some other US races require only the theoretical training. A full list of course options can be found at the following link https://www.ussailing.org/education/adult/safety-at-sea-courses/
